2 suspects are still at large.
Officials are looking for two suspects after a teenager was intentionally run over and killed in Andover this weekend.
Tristan Gene Robinson, a 17-year-old from Nowthen, Minnesota, was found dead in the street on Friday night, with injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle.
According to the Anoka County Sheriff's Office, Robinson had been at a friend's place near 141st Avenue and Palm Street when he "stepped out" around 6:20 p.m. Shortly after that, Robinson's friends heard the sounds of a crash and screeching tires. They found the boy on the ground with multiple injuries, but didn't see any cars. Robinson died at the scene.
Though first reported as a hit-and-run, authorities have new information that suggests the incident was no accident.
Robinson "was allegedly willfully, intentionally struck with a car by a driver who intended to do so," the sheriff's office said in a news release Sunday afternoon.
The incident has now been classified as second-degree murder.
Three people conspired to rob Robinson that night, and in the process, ended up running him over with a car, the Anoka County Sheriff's Office says.
In a press conference on Sunday (KARE 11 shared a live stream here), Cdr. Paul Sommer said the whole thing was over a small amount of marijuana.
Sommer said the suspects had used Snapchat to arrange a meeting with Robinson in the street that night, secretly planning to steal his weed. At some point during the attempted robbery, Robinson was fatally struck and the vehicle fled the scene.
One juvenile male from St. Francis is in custody. His name and age is not being released at this time.
Authorities are still looking for the other two suspects also known to reside in St. Francis: 19-year-old Loren James Gafner and 17-year-old Daveion Latyrell Maddox.
Gafner was allegedly the driver of the vehicle, the sheriff's office says. He's described as a white male, 5-foot-11 inches tall and 160 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.
Maddox is a black male of unknown height and weight who was allegedly in the vehicle at the time, and was a participant in the robbery conspiracy.
Authorities warn there is a concern that the two suspects have access to a gun. If you see either of them, do not approach – just call 911.
A car is also being sought. It's a 2005 gray Mercury Montego with front end damage. The Minnesota license plate number is 450 NMR.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the sheriff's office immediately at (763) 427-1212 or by calling 911.
"If anyone is offering them safe harbor or assisting them... they are potentially opening themselves up to an aiding and abetting charge," Sommers warned the public.
