The skinny on when Minnesota golf courses plan to open

Take your clubs out of the moth balls, it's almost time to play.

The countdown to golfing in Minnesota is on and many courses expect to open within a month.

According to MPR, pretty much all of Minnesota from St. Cloud south has 7 inches of snow cover or less, and with temps in the mid-40s most of this week, the snow could be gone in a matter of days.

How soon will courses open?

"April 7 would be my guess," Andy Wiese, the operations manager at Edinburgh USA in Brooklyn Park told GoMN. "You just never know, it all depends on if there was ice that formed on the grass before the snow coverage."

The average opening at Edinburgh USA is April 10.

Wiese expects that they'll be just fine, and that seems to be the case pretty much everywhere in the metro area.

Chris Tritabaugh, the superintendent at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska thinks course conditions should be good early in the season, and not just at his elite private course.

"It'll be pretty good," Tritabaugh told GoMN. "We haven't had a great deal of weather that brings golf courses a lot of difficulty."

As for opening day at Hazeltine: "It's very rare if we're not open by tax day," Tritabaugh said. "If I had a projected date right now, I'd be looking at around that date for this year."

The same goes for southern Minnesota

Northern Hills Golf Course in Rochester is 100 percent covered in about 5 inches of snow right now, but their head golf pro Mike Manahan tells GoMN that they should be opening around "the first week of April."

That's just in time for The Masters, April 5-8.

Waiting longer up north

Up north, expect courses to open about two weeks after they do in southern Minnesota.

The Classic at Madden's Golf Course in Brainerd has locked in April 20 as its opening day, and other courses in the area are projecting the same.

When asked how much snow they have on the ground in Brainerd, a spokesperson for Madden's told GoMN: "Quite a bit."
