Community tips lead to arrest of man suspected of smashing window, stealing purse

St. Paul police arrested a man Friday, the day after the department asked for help identifying a suspect seen in surveillance footage smashing a vehicle’s window and stealing a purse.

Police received multiple tips from community members, which they credit with helping them find the suspect, said Steve Linders, a St. Paul police spokesman.

On Monday at about noon, a woman went into a store in the area of University Avenue and Virginia Street. Surveillance video showed a man used a tool to smash her vehicle’s window after seven minutes, steal her purse and run away.

Police released photos of the suspect on Thursday and asked anyone with information to come forward.

On Friday afternoon, police found the suspect near University Avenue and Jackson Street, and arrested him on suspicion of possession of burglary tools and methamphetamine possession, Linders said. He also had several warrants.
