Gophers women’s basketball team suspends Destiny Pitts, their top scorer

The Gophers women’s basketball team suspended leading scorer Destiny Pitts and two other players were out for unspecified reasons in Minnesota’s Big Ten game against Illinois on Sunday in Champaign, Ill.

The U said in a statement that Pitts, a junior from Detroit, has been suspended for “conduct unbecoming a member of the team.”

The Gophers added that starting post player Taiye Bello and backup post Kehinde Bello would not play against the Illini. They are twin sisters from Southfield, Mich.

Pitts leads Minnesota with 16.3 points per game, with Taiye Bello the leading rebounder at 9.9 per game. Both played in all 15 games until Sunday, with Kehinde Bello coming off the bench in 14 games.

The shorthanded Gophers (11-4, 1-3 Big Ten) are attempting to end a three-game conference losing streak in a game that started at 2 p.m. Sunday.
