No injuries after Richfield school bus catches fire in Maplewood

Twenty people escaped without injuries when a Richfield School District bus caught fire Monday afternoon on Interstate 494 in Maplewood, officials say.

The bus was carrying 18 members of a middle school boys basketball team, their coach and a driver when the fire broke out about 3:30 p.m. near Carver Avenue, according to a WCCO-TV report.

Troopers are investigating a vehicle fire involving a school bus northbound Highway 494 at Carver Avenue in Maplewood. Preliminary investigation shows there were a total of 20 people on the bus. There are no injuries reported. This incident is under investigation.

The team was on its way to a game when the fire forced it off the road, the WCCO report said.

The Richfield School District sent a second bus to pick up the team, the Minnesota State Patrol said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, the State Patrol said.
