Friends of the Hennepin County Library’s 24th Pen Pals season to feature five top authors

Five award-winning authors will be guest readers during the 24th Pen Pals season, announced Thursday by the Friends of the Hennepin County Library.

Colum McCann, National Book Award-winner for “Let the Great World Spin,” opens the season Oct. 22.

He will be followed by:

Nikki Giovanni, award-winning poet, activist and author of 27 books — Nov. 5.

Yaa Gyasi, author of “Homegoing,” recipient of the National Book Foundation’s “5 under 35” award — Feb 11-12.

Susan Choi, National Book Award-winner, Pulitzer Prize finalist and author of “Trust Exercise” — May 6-7

Erik Larson, master of narrative nonfiction and bestselling author of “The Devil in the White City” — May 24-25.

McCann and Giovanni will do virtual events at 7:30 p.m. Gyasi, Choi and Larson will be in person with virtual backup. Their first day appearances will be at 7:30 p.m. with second-day readings at 11 a.m. If they appear in person, depending on coronavirus conditions, they will be at the Hopkins Center for the Arts, 1111 Main St., in Hopkins.
