Gophers plan to protest elimination of sports programs

Gophers student-athletes plan to march to the office of University of Minnesota President Joan Gabel on Wednesday to protest the school’s decision to drop three men’s sports starting in 2021-22.

Athletics director Mark Coyle has recommended the school eliminate the men’s gymnastics, tennis and track and field programs to help make up a massive deficit triggered by the coronavirus pandemic. The plan has been endorsed by the Board of Regents.

Students will gather at the Athletes Village on 15th Ave. SE north of 5th St. at 2 p.m. before marching south to Gabel’s office at Morrill Hall on campus.
