Gophers athletics will not conduct any sports-related activities on Election Day in order to give student-athletes more time to cast their votes on Nov. 3.
“Voting is a fundamental human right, and we encourage our student-athletes to exercise that right on Election Day,” Director of Athletics Mark Coyle said in a statement. “Our student-athletes are the leaders of tomorrow, and there is no better way to make sure their voice is heard than by voting on November 3.”
This decision comes as more calls for social justice are being answered on college campuses in the wake of Black man George Floyd’s death under the knee of a white Minneapolis police officer in May.
In 2018, the Gophers said its Twin Cities campus had a strong student voter turnout of 58.7 percent, which was higher than 44 states that year.
