Man hospitalized after encounter with Forest Lake police

An encounter with Forest Lake police left a 47-year-old man hospitalized Sunday afternoon, authorities say.

The man was involved in a shooting that followed a police chase in the Washington County suburb and was airlifted to a hospital, according to a statement issued by Capt. Greg Weiss of the Forest Lake Police Department.

The injured man’s condition was not available Sunday night.

The statement did not say whether the man was struck by gunfire or who fired the shots, and Weiss declined to answer questions about the incident.

About 1:30 p.m., the man arrived armed at the Forest Lake home of a person who had filed an order of protection against him, and threatened to harm the person and any police who showed up to the residence, Weiss said in the statement.

Officers responding to a 911 call at the home found the man in a vehicle and tried to stop him, but the man fled, according to Weiss.

Officers forced the man’s vehicle to a stop in the 7000 block of North Shore Trail, where the man “presented a threat to officers and shots were fired,” Weiss said.

Police gave the man first aid until paramedics arrived and he was taken by helicopter to the hospital.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting.
