Security officer wounded in shooting on St. Kate’s campus; police searching for suspect

A security officer at St. Catherine University in St. Paul was wounded in a shooting on campus Tuesday night, police said.

The uniformed but unarmed officer was shot once in the shoulder shortly before 9:30 p.m., when he confronted a person in a wooded area on the southwestern corner of St. Catherine’s campus, said Sgt. Mike Ernster, a St. Paul Police Department spokesman.

The suspect fled on foot.

The security officer was transported to Regions Hospital by St. Paul Fire Department paramedics, but his injury is not considered life-threatening, Ernster said.

The university was placed on lockdown as police established a perimeter around its Highland Park campus to search for the suspect.

Officers combed the woods where the shooting occurred with the assistance of a Minnesota State Patrol airplane, but they concluded the search of that area about midnight without locating the suspect.

The campus remained on lockdown early Wednesday morning as police expanded their search to residence halls and nearby apartments.

Residents of the neighborhood were asked to call 911 if they spotted anything suspicious, police said.

Police do not believe any students were in harm’s way during the incident. St. Kate’s is a private Catholic liberal arts university with an enrollment of about 5,000.
